The English Language test TOEFL just witnessed its most significant overhaul in years. On January 21, 2026, ETS officially launched the “New TOEFL iBT“—a revamped version of the exam designed to be shorter, smarter, and more reflective of modern communication.
For MBA aspirants, this change is more than just a shorter test day; it represents a fundamental shift in how your language skills are measured against the standards of top-tier business schools. At ARINGO, we’ve analysed the data and contacted admissions offices directly to help you navigate this new era.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
- Is the new TOEFL harder than the old one?
No, it is designed to be “smarter.” The adaptive format reduces test fatigue, but every question carries more weight. A score of 5.5 or 6.0 still requires elite-level English.
- How do I convert my new 1.0–6.0 band to the old 120 scale?
ETS provides an equivalency on your report. Generally: 6.0 ≈ 114-120, 5.5 ≈ 107-113, and 5.0 ≈ 95-106.
- Will my old TOEFL score still be valid?
Yes. TOEFL scores are valid for two years. If you took the “old” test in late 2025, it remains valid until late 2027.
- What is the biggest content change?
The Writing section. The long “Independent Essay” is replaced by practical tasks like building professional emails and contributing to academic discussion boards.
- Should I take IELTS or the New TOEFL?
It depends on your target. For U.S. M7 schools, the new TOEFL is excellent. For UK programs like Oxford or Cambridge, IELTS remains the safer bet until the new TOEFL is fully integrated.
