Admissions Process & Decision-Making
What made you choose Columbia Business School over other top MBA programs?
I knew I wanted to stay in New York to remain close to family and friends, and Columbia Business School’s unique position at the intersection of finance, technology, and entrepreneurship made it the ideal fit for my career goals.
Can you walk us through your MBA admissions journey – from research to submitting your applications?
Since I knew I wanted to stay in NYC, I focused on NYU and Columbia as the top schools in the city. I visited both campuses, spoke with friends who were current students and alumni, and attended all the admissions non-/virtual events. NYU’s Tech MBA Round 2 deadline was in November and CBS’s was in January, so I worked with ARINGO to craft tailored essays for each program and prepare thoroughly for my interviews.
What part of your application do you think made the biggest difference in getting admitted?
Truly taking the time to dig deep and define my unique story and perspective made all the difference.
Did you work with an MBA admissions consultant, and if so, how did they help?
Yes, I worked with ARINGO. They helped me refine my narrative, structure my essays effectively, and highlight key elements that aligned with CBS’s values. They also supported me in preparing for interviews, including mock interviews with insightful feedback that really strengthened my performance.
What advice would you give to applicants who want to stand out in the Columbia MBA application process?
Be specific about why CBS is right for you and how you’ll contribute to the community. Leverage your unique background and experiences to show what you’ll bring to the table, and be authentic and reflective in your essays.
Life at the New Campus (Manhattanville)
How would you describe the new Manhattanville campus? What makes it different from other business school campuses?
The campus is stunning—modern, very techy, open, and built with collaboration in mind. It’s integrated with Columbia’s broader academic and innovation ecosystem, which you can feel daily.
Are there any unique spaces or resources at the new campus that you particularly enjoy or find useful?
The lawn between the Geffen and Kravis buildings is one of my favorite spots. When the weather is nice, it becomes a vibrant hub—perfect for taking a break, recharging, and having casual conversations with classmates.
Has being in Manhattanville rather than Morningside affected your day-to-day experience or interaction with other Columbia schools?
The Manhattanville campus is located about a mile (1.5 kilometers) north of the main Morningside campus. In my opinion, this distance has been beneficial—especially during times of heightened activity and protests on the main campus—providing a more focused and calm environment for CBS students.
Academics & Electives
Which electives have been your favorites so far, and why?
Product Management Lab – I had the opportunity to work on a real-world project with Uber, focused on exploring ways to monetize a rider’s in-trip time. It was a hands-on, high-impact experience that gave me a deeper understanding of product strategy.
Generative AI for Business – This course offered an exciting look into cutting-edge applications of GenAI and how businesses are already leveraging it to innovate and drive value.
Network & Community
How would you describe the Columbia MBA community – socially and professionally?
It’s dynamic and global. People are ambitious but approachable, and the diversity of backgrounds leads to fascinating discussions and connections.
What opportunities have you had to connect with alumni, both in NYC and globally?
A lot of different club events, fireside chats and conferences. The highlights was a west coast trek the Tech club organized to SF and we had an alumni mixer night where we met a bunch of alumni who live there.
Career Opportunities & Job Search
What has your recruiting experience been like at CBS so far?
The Career Center and second-year students offer solid guidance, and CBS’s location provides constant access to companies and industry leaders. However, in tech—where recruiting is often less structured—you really need to be proactive: network consistently, and take full advantage of the resources and support offered by clubs like Tech, AI, and FinTech.
How does being in NYC influence the internship and job opportunities available to you?
It’s a game changer. From weekly speaker events to on-site visits, there are so many touchpoints with companies across industries—and many of them are just a subway ride away.
What kind of career support does CBS offer – especially for international students?
Tips & Reflections
Looking back, is there anything you would have done differently in your MBA journey?
I’d recommend starting to network early— even before starting the program if possible, especially with alumni and current students. Building those relationships early on is incredibly valuable for navigating recruiting and securing an internship.
What surprised you most about CBS after joining?
How fun and supportive the student community is—everyone genuinely wants to see each other succeed, and there’s a great spirit of collaboration both inside and outside the classroom.
What are your top three tips for future CBS applicants?
- Be clear on your “why CBS” story.
- Reflect deeply on your personal and professional growth.
- Connect with students—it will give you great insight and energy.
