Stanford GSB MBA Application Essays and Tips 2025-2026

Stanford requires that you write two personal essays.

What matters most to you, and why?

“For this essay, we would like you to reflect deeply and write from the heart. Once you’ve identified what matters most to you, help us understand why. You might consider, for example, what makes this so important to you? What people, insights, or experiences have shaped your perspectives? (up to 650 words)”

This isn’t just a values essay, it’s Stanford’s way of assessing self-awareness, authenticity, and emotional intelligence. They want to understand what drives you at your core, beyond the bullet points on your resume.

  • Go beyond the surface: Don’t say “integrity” or “family” unless you’re willing to explore why, when, and how that value became central to your identity. This essay succeeds when it’s introspective and personal, not generic.
  • Tell a story only you can tell: This essay isn’t about impressing, it’s about revealing. Think childhood moments, pivotal failures and identity-shaping challenges. Go deep, not broad.
  • Link back to who you are today: This isn’t just a memoir. It’s about connecting the past to the present: how this core belief influences your leadership style, career aspirations, or interactions with others.
  • Be vulnerable, but not self-pitying: If you share a difficult moment, focus on how it changed or motivated you, not just the hardship itself.

Why Stanford for you?

“Describe your aspirations and how your Stanford GSB experience will help you realize them. If you are applying to both the MBA and MSx programs, use this essay to address your interest in both programs. (up to 350 words)”

Adcoms wants to understand your vision for impact and why Stanford is the right launchpad. This is not just about goals, it’s about fit. How do your values, aspirations, and learning needs align with GSB?

  • Start with your “north star”: Clearly articulate your short- and long-term goals, but don’t just list industries. Paint a picture of the change you want to create in the world.
  • Be specific about Stanford: Mention specific Stanford elements, classes, clubs, labs, professors, alumni, and experiences that will directly contribute to your growth.
  • Tie back to Essay 1: Connect your purpose from Essay 1 to your future path and show how Stanford will bridge the two.
  • Avoid name-dropping for the sake of it: If you mention a professor or alum, say why their work inspired or shaped your vision. Relevance matters more than prestige.
  • Show self-awareness about what you need: What gaps are you hoping to close, be it in leadership, decision-making, global exposure, or social innovation? Adcoms appreciate learners who are hungry to grow.
