Kellogg MBA Interview: How to Prepare and Stand Out

Getting invited to a Kellogg MBA interview is an important step in the admissions process. At this point, the admissions team already knows your resume, essays, test scores, and recommendations. The interview gives them a chance to meet the person behind the application.

For Kellogg, that conversation is particularly important because culture and community are such a big part of the experience. The school looks for candidates who are collaborative, curious, self-aware, and likely to contribute to the Kellogg community.

This guide covers the Kellogg MBA interview process, common Kellogg interview questions, behavioral questions, career goals, school fit, and the mistakes you should avoid.

Kellogg MBA Interview

The Kellogg interview is not simply another test of your qualifications. By the time you reach the interview, the school has already reviewed the main parts of your application.

The interview gives Kellogg an opportunity to understand how you communicate, how you think, and how you would fit into the school’s collaborative community.

One of the most important things to remember is that Kellogg places a strong emphasis on collaboration. Your answers should give the interviewer a sense of how you work with other people, respond to challenges, learn from your experiences, and contribute to a team.

Before you start preparing answers, spend some time understanding Kellogg.

Kellogg is known for its collaborative culture, flexible curriculum, and emphasis on experiential learning. Students and alumni frequently describe the community as supportive and highly team-oriented.

That matters during the interview.

Your answer to “Why Kellogg?” should not sound like a list of rankings, facilities, or generic benefits. You should be able to explain why Kellogg’s culture, programs, clubs, courses, and community make sense for you.

Speaking with current students and alumni can be particularly useful. Their experiences can help you understand the school beyond what you find on the official website.

1. Tell Me About Yourself or Walk Me Through Your Resume

This answer can be longer than a typical interview response. A three to four minute answer can work well if it has a clear structure.

Do not simply read your resume out loud. The interviewer already has it.

Instead, explain the decisions behind your career. Why did you choose your degree? Why did you move into your current industry? Why did you make a particular career change? Why are you pursuing an MBA now?

The goal is to connect the different parts of your experience into a story that makes sense.

2. Why MBA and Why Now?

Have two to four clear reasons for pursuing an MBA.

  • Building a stronger business foundation
  • Developing leadership skills
  • Expanding your professional network
  • Making a career or industry transition

Then explain why Kellogg is the right place to achieve those goals.

3. What Are Your Career Goals?

Be specific. Saying that you want to work in technology is not enough.

A stronger answer identifies the role, company or type of employer, function, industry, and geography you are targeting.

For example, instead of saying “I want to work in tech,” you might explain that you want to become a Product Manager in cloud and AI in New York.

You should also explain why an MBA is necessary to make that transition.

4. Why Kellogg?

This is one question you should prepare even if you are not certain it will be asked directly.

Have three or four specific reasons for choosing Kellogg. These could include a particular course, student club, professor, career opportunity, experiential learning program, or something you learned through conversations with students and alumni.

The answer should make it clear that Kellogg is a school you have genuinely researched and can see yourself attending.

Kellogg interviews can include questions about leadership, teamwork, conflict, failure, achievements, and difficult situations.

A useful way to structure these stories is the STAR framework:

  • Situation: Explain what was happening.
  • Task: Describe what you needed to accomplish.
  • Action: Focus on what you personally did.
  • Result: Explain what happened.

There is one more part worth adding: what you learned.

After explaining the result, take a moment to reflect on what the experience taught you. This is particularly useful when discussing failure, conflict, or leadership challenges.

A strong MBA interview story does not need to make you look perfect. It needs to show that you understand your own actions and can learn from experience.

Kellogg is interested in what you will bring to the community, not just what you hope to gain from it.

Think about the activities and interests that genuinely matter to you. You might contribute through a professional club, an entrepreneurial interest, a sport, a hobby, community work, or an activity that you have pursued outside your career.

Do not feel that you need an extraordinary story to answer this question. You do not need to have founded a nonprofit or achieved something dramatic.

The important thing is to be genuine and explain how you would participate in the Kellogg community.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kellogg

Common Kellogg interview questions include “Tell me about yourself,” “Why MBA?”, “Why now?”, “What are your career goals?”, and “Why Kellogg?”
Most answers should take about one to two minutes. A resume walkthrough can be longer, around three to four minutes, as long as you are explaining the decisions behind your career rather than simply repeating your resume.

Give specific reasons that connect Kellogg to your goals and interests. You might discuss particular courses, clubs, programs, professors, or conversations with current students and alumni.

Prepare stories covering leadership, teamwork, conflict, failure, difficult decisions, and important achievements. The STAR framework can help you structure these answers, followed by a clear explanation of what you learned from the experience.
Prepare two or three questions that are relevant to the person interviewing you. Asking an alum about their experience with the Kellogg network or career after graduation can lead to a much more useful conversation than asking something that is already available on the school’s website.
Treat the interview like a professional job interview. A button-down shirt is a minimum for a virtual interview, while a more formal outfit is appropriate for an in-person interview. The most important thing is to look professional and feel comfortable enough to focus on the conversation.
