In recent years, top business schools across the United States have experienced a significant decline in applications to their MBA programs. This trend, which has persisted over the past two years, has raised concerns about the future of MBA education and its appeal to prospective students. Notably, prestigious institutions such as Harvard Business School, Stanford Graduate School of Business, and MIT Sloan School of Management have been among the most affected.
Are all top MBA programs seeing a decline? Most of them, yes! The top brands are seeing a 15%-25% decline in the number of applicants compared to 2 years ago.
Let’s look at the numbers of the most famous MBA programs:
Harvard Business School (HBS) saw a considerable decrease in MBA applications from 2021 to 2023. In 2021, HBS received 9,773 applications. By 2023, this number had dropped to 8,149, a decline of 1,624 applications. This represents a decrease of approximately 16.6%.
Similarly, Stanford Graduate School of Business experienced a notable decline in application numbers. The school received 7,367 applications in 2021, which fell to 6,190 in 2023. This decline of 1,177 applications equates to a 16.0% reduction.
The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania also faced an application downturn. In 2021, Wharton received 7,338 applications. By 2023, the number had decreased to 6,193, resulting in a loss of 1,145 applications, or a 15.6% decrease.
Columbia Business School saw its applications drop from 6,535 in 2021 to 5,430 in 2023. This reduction of 1,105 applications corresponds to a 16.9% decline.
MIT Sloan School of Management was the hardest hit among the top business schools. Applications to Sloan dropped from 7,112 in 2021 to 5,317 in 2023. This significant reduction of 1,795 applications represents a 25.2% decline.
The trend of declining applications is not limited to the M7 schools. Several other top business schools have also seen similar patterns:
Yale School of Management Applications dropped from 3,877 in 2021 to 3,076 in 2023, a decrease of 801 applications, or 20.7%.
Michigan Ross School of Business experienced a decline from 4,003 applications in 2021 to 2,976 in 2023, a decrease of 1,027 applications, or 25.7%.
UC-Berkeley Haas School of Business saw a reduction from 3,841 applications in 2021 to 2,904 in 2023, a decrease of 937 applications, or 24.4%.
Dartmouth Tuck School of Business applications fell from 2,463 in 2021 to 2,009 in 2023, a reduction of 454 applications, or 18.4%.
Despite the overall trend, a few business schools managed to buck the trend and saw an increase in applications:
Cornell Johnson Graduate School of Management: Applications increased from 2,105 in 2021 to 2,553 in 2023, an increase of 448 applications, or 21.3%.
University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler Business School: Saw an increase from 1,494 applications in 2021 to 2,064 in 2023, an increase of 570 applications, or 38.2%.
Rice Jones Graduate School of Business: Applications rose from 867 in 2021 to 1,178 in 2023, an increase of 311 applications, or 35.9%.
The decline in MBA applications to top business schools reflects a significant shift in the landscape of business education. While some institutions have attracted more applicants, most have seen substantial decreases, prompting questions about the underlying causes. Possible reasons could include the growing popularity of alternative credentials, shifting career aspirations, or economic considerations. As business schools navigate this evolving environment, they may need to rethink their value propositions and strategies to attract the next generation of business leaders.
Will the decline in MBA applications change the selectiveness of business schools or reduce their rigorous screening processes and the quality of MBA candidates and graduates? In a word: no. To elaborate, top MBA programs remain highly selective. Stanford has a 6% acceptance rate, Harvard 8%, and Wharton 11% (these are the global university statistics. While a decline in applicants can be concerning, these schools still receive thousands of applications from highly competitive and competent candidates, ensuring they can maintain their rigorous standards and select the finest for their prestigious programs.
