What are the key characteristics of Yale's MBA program?

The school has an academic-theoretic orientation (as opposed to other schools which emphasize a practical orientation), and stresses ethics and social responsibility. The school is relatively open to applicants from unconventional backgrounds, and is trying to strengthen its international orientation.

Alumni include the following individuals, with current or past positions in parentheses: James Kelley (President of Vestar Capital Partners), Daniel Weiss (President of Lafayette College), Indra Nooyi (CEO, Pepsico), Tom Ascheim (CEO, Newsweek) and James Firestone (President of Corporate Operations at Xerox).

  • Small school.
  • Have a somewhat more theoretical (as opposed to practical) orientation than other business schools. Has been characterized as ‘the thinking person’s b-school’.

  • Strong emphasis on ethics and corporate social responsibility.
  • Generous loan forgiveness program for those entering non-profit/government jobs.
  • Ability to take courses at other Yale schools.

  • Unique ‘integrated curriculum’- rather than individual courses in the traditional disciplines (i.e. finance, accounting etc.), first-year courses are structured around the constituencies a manager must successfully engage – the Investor, Customer, Operations Engine etc. The courses are taught by teams of professors from different fields.
