Yale SOM MBA essay prompts for 2026–2027

Applicants write one required essay of up to 500 words and select one of three prompts:

1. Commitment: Describe the biggest commitment you have ever made. Explain why it is meaningful and the actions you have taken to support it.
2. Community: Describe the community that has been most meaningful to you. Explain what you gained from it and the most important contribution you made.
3. Challenge: Describe the most significant challenge you have faced. Explain how you confronted it and how it shaped you.

The optional-information section is truly optional. Use it only when important context—such as an academic anomaly, employment gap, or unusual circumstance—needs clarification.

Other important application components

Your resume should present your academic and professional progress and highlight meaningful accomplishments. Choose recommenders who know your work well; Yale values the quality of the relationship more than the recommender’s title and requires recommendations to be independently written.

Interviews are invitation-only and offered on a rolling basis. Yale describes them as 30-minute, largely behavioral conversations conducted by a second-year student, recent alumnus, or admissions committee member. Prepare by reviewing your resume, essay, application, and post-MBA plans.
